TL;DR
Natural Law defines right as actions causing no harm, wrong as causing harm
All wrongdoing is essentially a form of theft (taking without permission)
Our actions have immutable consequences, much like touching a hot stove
Understanding these mechanics simplifies moral decision-making daily |
Hey Success Squad!
Quick question: What skills do you think you need to make consistently good moral decisions?
When I first got sober at 33, I thought I had NOTHING. Zero. Nada. Just wasted years, fractured relationships, and a foggy sense of direction—left over from being kicked out of my home at 16 and spiraling into drug use.
But here's the plot twist—I was totally wrong.
The Moral Mechanics That Changed Everything
In yesterday's email, I shared how discovering Natural Law gave me a solid foundation for my moral compass after years of confusion. Today, I want to dive deeper into the mechanics of this system, which I first encountered through Mark Passio's brilliant work on Natural Law.
Passio's straightforward approach stripped away the academic complexity and showed me how these principles operate in everyday life. His insights helped me understand something crucial: morality isn't subjective or complicated—it's as clear as physics once you understand its mechanics.
💣 TRUTH BOMB: "Understanding Natural Law isn't about gaining some mystical wisdom. It's about recognizing what you already know deep down but might have forgotten."
The Simplicity on the Other Side of Complexity
Here's what clicked for me: Natural Law defines right and wrong with crystal clarity.
A right action causes no harm to another's life, freedom, or property.
A wrong action causes harm to another's life, freedom, or property.
That's it. No exceptions, no footnotes, no "it depends."
What's more, I realized that all wrongdoing—at its core—is actually a form of theft. Think about it:
Murder: Stealing someone's life
Assault: Stealing someone's well-being or health
Fraud: Stealing through deception
Coercion: Stealing someone's choice
This framework transformed how I view every interaction. When I make decisions now, I simply ask: "Am I taking something that doesn't belong to me?"
The Hot Stove Principle
Here's where Natural Law gets really interesting: the consequences are built in.
Remember touching a hot stove as a kid? The pain wasn't punishment—it was an inevitable consequence of your action. Natural Law works the same way.
Before understanding this, I'd constantly find myself in chaotic situations, wondering why life felt so unpredictable. But the chaos wasn't random—it was the direct result of my actions and the actions of those around me.
When humanity collectively aligns with moral behavior (causing no harm), we create freedom and harmony. When we engage in immoral behavior (causing harm), we inevitably generate chaos and suffering—both personally and societally.

Your Turn: Applying These Principles
Understanding these mechanics doesn't mean you'll always make perfect decisions. I certainly don't. But it does mean you'll have clarity about what's happening and why.
Want to integrate these principles more deeply into your daily life? Here's a powerful prompt to help:
Drop this in your AI (free at chat.com)
You are a Natural Law Reflection Partner, guiding me to explore moral choices through Natural Law principles with compassion and curiosity. Your role is to ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully, and illuminate cause-and-effect truths without judgment.
First, invite me to describe a situation where I face a moral dilemma or recently made a difficult choice. After listening, ask these questions one at a time, waiting for my answer before continuing:
Does/did this action harm another’s life, freedom, or property? How specifically?
Am I taking/did I take something that doesn’t belong to me, tangible or intangible?
Would I feel comfortable if someone did the same thing to me?
What are the natural consequences of this action — not punishments, but real effects?
Does my intuition align with my rational analysis?
Afterward, help me identify where harm exists or is avoided, clarify the difference between man's law and Natural Law, and highlight natural consequences. Finally, ask me what insights I’ve gained and how I might apply them in the future. Your tone must always remain gentle, curious, and supportive.
The beautiful thing about this approach is that it works regardless of your spiritual beliefs, political views, or cultural background. It's as universal as the laws of physics.
Tomorrow's Insight
In tomorrow's email, I'll show you how to put these principles into action daily—specifically, how the Generative Principle (what you genuinely care about) determines your experience of life.
I'll also share the exact framework I use to make difficult decisions with confidence and clarity—even in situations where the "right" choice isn't immediately obvious.
